Here's how we followed the three steps:

  1. Explore your community: My partner Veyra and I met with administrators at the Maxime Prestige Primary School in the Bastos area of Yaounde,Cameroon and agreed on implementing the project at their school. Together with the school, we requested that student ages 5-13 be the target of our program because we felt that was the age span when artist creativity truly blossoms.

  2. Choose the form of artistic expression: Music became our focus. Veyra and I recognized the significance of music in Cameroonian culture and concluded that opening doors for students to create their own sound would the best way to integrate an imaginative mentality within the school.

  3. Create a timeline and budget: Our timeline to effectively introduce a non-utilitarian education that offers luxuries such as art, music, dance, etc is 2 years. Considering all the stakeholders, the American School of Yaounde hosts an annual fundraiser Walk-A-Thon to help finance the program.

"As an advisor my role is to empower innovative thinkers like Shiri who are committed to making change.  As a collective, the objective of CAS is to listen, collaborate, and reflect in order to elevate impact in the community. Shiri has developed a model that will leave a lasting legacy on our program. "
